My friend, Laura, is going through a divorce. She has been married for thirty years and has really never lived alone. Even when her kids went off to college, her husband was home most nights, except when on business trips. Laura and Joe married after college and started their family a few years later. To add to this life changing time in her life, Laura also just retired from teaching. She is a grandmother and her grandchildren live out of town, so she will be able to visit them whenever she wants to now. Her daughter has assured her that she is welcome to visit whenever she needs reinforcement through grandchildren hugs and kisses. She and I talked about changes she can make in her home to give her a new start feeling. We discussed alarm systems to make her feel safer now that she will there alone at night. We talked about painting the walls, rearranging the furniture, definitely taking down some family pictures that include Joe. She will be okay. She has a great support system in her good friends and family.
